New Zealanders struggling to keep on top of power bills this winter now have easier access to practical advice and information about support through a renewed EnergyMate website.
The Electricity Retailers’ and Generators’ Association of New Zealand says the updated website brings together simple guidance on reducing power use, understanding electricity bills, and finding help when costs become unmanageable.
ERGANZ Chief Executive Bridget Abernethy says EnergyMate is a trusted brand, providing accessible information for those who are struggling to pay their power bill.
“We’re in the depths of winter, and we know people are doing it tough with rising household costs. People often don’t know where to go for help, and EnergyMate provides a good starting point for those who are stressed or worried,” Abernethy says.
“There are lots of options available to those experiencing energy hardship, and the support page points people towards other agencies that can help as well, such as Work and Income and community initiatives.”
EnergyMate features Colin the energy coach, who gives people tips and advice on the website and through a digital media campaign.
“It’s about more than telling people to use less power. Colin the energy coach also walks people through what support is available and guides people on topics that can be confusing and overwhelming, such as differences between power plans and what people can do about a cold, damp home.”
Abernethy says people worried about power costs often weren’t aware of the support available, and one of the first things they should do is to contact their power company.
“People should never hesitate to contact their power company if they’re struggling to make ends meet. Our members have consumer care initiatives that support access to affordable electricity, and their customer wellbeing teams are trained to support those in energy hardship.
“Retailers can talk through payment options and connect people with budgeting or financial mentoring services where that would help.”
