ERGANZ says Labour’s SolarSaver policy would help Kiwis electrify their homes and drive lower energy costs for families.
The new policy would introduce Government-backed finance options and subsidies for households to install solar, as well as easy plug-in options for renters and a community battery fund.
ERGANZ CEO Bridget Abernethy says the policy sends a positive signal and says she welcomes bipartisan support for policies that accelerate access to electricity.
“It’s great to see the two biggest political parties announce policies designed to help more Kiwis electrify, along with National’s proposed Home Energy Fund announced last month.”
Abernethy says upfront costs remain a barrier to home energy upgrades, and believes SolarSaver’s provision of free advice and grants, and the policy’s focus on low-middle income households and renters, could improve energy independence for more households.
“All Kiwis should benefit from an electrified New Zealand, and solar can be a great option for people to generate some electricity for themselves, particularly when paired with batteries,” says Abernethy.
Abernethy says household electrification needs enduring policy that lasts the length of investments.
“Energy upgrades are a long-term investment, and households need confidence to make that shift.
“Electrification can help New Zealanders reduce their total energy costs by replacing expensive fossil fuels with efficient electric alternatives for transport, heating and everyday energy use.”
Abernethy says ERGANZ looks forward to learning more about the measures, particularly those that may require retailer involvement.
